Consumer interest in products, such as supplements, that address specific health conditions has been on the rise, resulting in heightened manufacturer focus. While some products, such as those used for weight management or by diabetics, use ingredient systems that allow the reduction of components like fat or sugars, other products use a cocktail of healthful ingredients believed to be beneficial for a specific health condition.

On the following pages, 10 health conditions are listed along with statistics on the size of the market. Each health category is followed by descriptions and suppliers of commercially available ingredients that may be beneficial in the formulation of these products. The conditions covered are as follows.
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Cognitive health
  • Diabetic health
  • Weight management
  • Immunity enhancement
  • Bone & Joint health
  • Energy and/or Sports performance
  • Digestive health
  • Cancer risk reduction
  • Eye health
  • General health

    Cardiovascular Health

There is a great opportunity in the development of foods and nutritional products for consumers concerned about cardiovascular disease (CVD). This condition, primarily heart disease and stroke, causes more deaths in Americans of both genders and all racial and ethnic groups than any other disease. It is also one of the leading causes of disability in the U.S. CVD costs an estimated $300 billion annually, as measured in health care expenditures, medications and lost productivity due to disability and death.

The American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org) estimates that for the year 2004, some 79.4 million Americans had one or more forms of cardiovascular disease. Some 72 million had high blood pressure, a risk factor associated with CVD. Some 7.9 million had a myocardial infarction (acute heart attack), and 5.7 million had a stroke. In 2004, 36.3% of all deaths were due to CVD.

Although coronary heart disease caused about 452,300 deaths in 2004, the death rate from this disease, happily, declined in the time period between 1994 to 2004.

    Cognitive Health

Cognitive health includes a range of conditions and symptoms -- from depression to dementia to simple mental alertness.

Mental disorders are common in the U.S. and internationally. An estimated 26.2% of Americans ages 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. This translates to 57.7 million people.

Women experience depression at twice the rate of men. This 2:1 ratio exists regardless of racial or ethnic background or economic status. The lifetime prevalence of major depression is 20-26% for women and 8-12% for men.

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) affects an estimated 4.5 million Americans, according to the National Institute on Aging, NIH. It is the most common cause of dementia among people age 65 and older. Although the most important risk factor is age, about 5% of people between the ages of 65 to 74 have AD, and nearly half of those aged 85 and over are affected; it is not a normal part of aging.

Choline is an essential nutrient. Choline from Balchem is the first ingredient to receive a nutrient content claim under the FDA-MA act. It is mandated by the FDA in infant formula. It has FDA-accepted structure/function claims such as: helps memory problems associated with aging; prenatal use leads to lifelong improvement of memory; supplementation during infancy and childhood leads to improved lifelong memory; reduces fatigue and increases vigor during strenuous exercise; lowers plasma homocysteine (cardiovascular, delay onset of dementia); and promotes healthy liver function. Diabetic Health

According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, NIH, in America in 2005, 20.8 million people have diabetes (this is about 7% of the population). Among adults aged 60 years or older, it rises to 20.9%. Of those with this condition, some 14.6 million people have been diagnosed with the condition, while another 6.2 million people have not yet been informed.

The Clearinghouse also reports that of those aged 20 years or younger, some 176,500 people (or 0.22% of this demographic group) have diabetes. While about one in every 400 to 600 young people (children and adolescents) has type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes is still rare and found primarily in the American-Indian, African-American and Hispanic-American populations.

Soy protein concentrates, isolates and isoflavones are used in many health-specific treatments. Research supports the use of soy proteins and isoflavones to help normalize blood glucose levels and reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. In one study (Vijay Jayagopal, V., et al., 2002. Diabetes Care 25:1709-1714), 32 post-menopausal women with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes completed a randomized, double blind, cross-over trial of dietary supplementation with soy protein and isoflavones. Results from a study conducted by professor Stephen Atkin, Hull University, showed that soy phytoestrogens favorably alter insulin resistance, glycemic control and serum lipoproteins in post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes. Weight Management

With the watch on health and obesity gripping media attention, 66% of the population between the ages of 20 to 74 are overweight (70.7% male and 61.4% female), while 32.1% are obese (30.2% male and 34% female).

In a study published in the August 2007 issue of Epidemiologic Reviews, John Hopkins University researchers predict that if current issues with weight management continue, 75% of U.S. adults will be overweight, with 41% of adults actually being obese, by 2015. Also, the number of overweight or obese children and adolescents will grow from 16% of that population to 24% by 2015.

New research published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition suggests that starting the day with an egg breakfast vs. a bagel-based breakfast of equal weight can reduce hunger and help reduce caloric intake by more than 400 calories over the next 24 hours. The egg breakfast induced greater satiety and significantly reduced the participants’ food intake for the rest of the day. Eggs have an impressive macronutrient composition to contribute to their satiety impact. American Egg Board, Elisa Maloberti, 847-296-7043, emaloberti@aeb.org, www.aeb.org

Around 28.3 million women and 18.1 million men report doctor-diagnosed arthritis. Between the years 2003 and 2005, 50% of adults 65 years and over reported an arthritis diagnosis. By the year 2030, it is estimated that 64.9 million citizens will have been formally diagnosed with an arthritic condition.

Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans, or 55% of the people 50 years of age and older. In the U.S., 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are likely to have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis. Of the 10 million Americans estimated to have osteoporosis, eight million are women and two million are men.

Clinical trials prove calcium phosphates (dicalcium phosphate and tricalcium phosphate) promoted significant improvement in bone mineralization and bone strength, when compared to calcium alone. Moreover, a high dose of calcium supplementation interferes with phosphorus absorption; therefore, a calcium phosphate source should be used to prevent phosphorus deficiency. Innophos has responded to consumer demand with VersaCAL® Clear, a highly soluble calcium phosphate specifically designed for use in clear beverages. Also available is CAL-RISE®, a patented slow-acting, calcium-based leavening agent, ideal for reduced-sodium baked goods. Clinical studies show that D-ribose, a unique, five-carbon sugar, helps regenerate energy levels in tired muscles, including hearts. Used in functional foods and in the treatment of congestive heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, D-Ribose is made by the body naturally to stimulate the synthesis of ATP, the “energy currency“ of the cells, which is critical to health and maintaining normal energy-dependent body functions. D-Ribose accelerates energy recovery when tissues are stressed by strenuous exercise, overwork or disease. Supplementing these stressed cells with Corvalen D-ribose restores cellular energy. Digestive Health

Digestive health not only covers a wide range of conditions, from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease to constipation, but a healthy “stable” of intestinal microflora has been associated with benefits ranging from heart health to enhanced immunity.

According to the website for The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (www.digestive.niddk.nih.gov/statistics/statistics.htm), a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, NIH, in 1996, some 3.1 million people suffered from constipation, while a 2002 National Hospital Discharge Survey showed that 398,000 were hospitalized in that year for constipation. The site notes that the 1996 National Health Interview Survey also reported 8.5 million people suffering from hemorrhoids. Also, there were 16 million new cases of infectious diarrhea, some 2.5 million people with diverticular disease and 2.1 million with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Another study (Loftus, EV. 2004. Gastroenterology.126:1504-17) reports that in 2001, the prevalence of ulcerative colitis was 246 cases per 100,000 people per year, while Crohn’s disease was 162 cases per 100,000 people per year. A 2001 study (Rusynyk, RA and Still, CD. 2001. Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. 101(4 Suppl Pt 1):S10-2) estimated that 30 to 50 million people suffered from lactose intolerance in 1994.

NUTRIOSE®, a novel ingredient, provides up to 85% soluble fiber. It has an outstanding digestive tolerance, even at high dosage. NUTRIOSE is highly stable to heat and acidic conditions, allowing it to be incorporated into a wide variety of food and confectionery applications. Clinical studies show consuming 10g per day of NUTRIOSE®06 produces positive observable changes in gut microflora and can promote the availability of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The changes in the colonic environment suggest that NUTRIOSE 06 is a prebiotic. Roquette America Inc., Philippe Levresse, 319-526-2282, philippe.levresse@roquette.com, www.roquette.com

Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet and a healthy gastrointestinal tract. Dietary fiber reduces the risk of developing various conditions such as diverticular disease and constipation, and may have an effect on colon cancer risk. And not to be forgotten, fiber aids in weight control by contributing to the feeling of fullness and lowers the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Canadian Harvest® Oat Fibers and Stabilized Brans and SunOpta Soy Fibers from SunOpta Ingredients Group are an excellent way to answer the call for more fiber. Reduced Risk of Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results) Cancer Statistics Review 1975-2004 (http://seer.cancer.gov), the overall lifetime risk of being diagnosed with some type of invasive cancer is roughly 41%. Some of the highest rates are for the prostate (16.7% lifetime risk), lung (7.0%), breast (6.4%), colon and rectum (5.4%) and bladder (2.3% total for invasive and in situ).

Statistical data on rates vary widely depending on factors such as sex and race. Even the figure for “lifetime risk” varies, depending on when someone was born and the length of their life. Thus, a 40-year-old woman living to 75 would have an 8.6% chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer before she dies. However, a 55-year-old woman living to 75 would only have a 6.5% chance, according to SEER.

Antioxidants help our bodies protect against disease and age-related health risks. Cells in the body wage a battle against free radicals -- unstable oxygen molecules associated with cancer, heart disease and the effects of aging. Phytonutrients, antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, neutralize free radicals and help prevent cell damage. The potent antioxidants found in wild blueberries include flavonoids and other phenolics such as anthocyanins; wild blueberries have one of the highest anthocyanin levels of any fruits and vegetables. Eye Health

In the April 2004 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology, a study sponsored by the National Eye Institute of NIH estimated that of the U.S. population 40 years and older, some 1.8 million people have advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD); another 7.3 million people are at substantial risk for vision loss from AMD. The 1.8 million is projected to increase to 2.9 million by 2020. As of when the study took place, some 2.2 million people had glaucoma, and this condition was expected to increase to 3.3 million by 2020. Similarly, diabetic retinopathy was estimated at 4.1 million and was expected to grow to 7.2 million. In the same period, cases of cataracts were projected to increase from 20.5 million to 30.1 million.

Other significant findings from the study include that AMD is strongly associated with increasing age, particularly after age 60. Also, more than one in 10 white Americans over age 80 has vision loss from AMD. However, glaucoma is almost three times as common in African-Americans as in whites, and the prevalence of glaucoma rises rapidly in Hispanics over age 65. Cataracts are the leading cause of low vision among all Americans.
