Home » Harvesting the Benefits of Grape Seed Extract
The only GRAS-approved form of grape seed extract, ActiVin® received Flavor Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) GRAS status in June 2001. The FEMA panel is an independent third party, and obtaining FEMA GRAS is rigorous. “An indication of the rigor FEMA applies to their approval process is found in the fact that the FDA has accepted all of the FEMA GRAS recommendations to date,” states Christine DeMont, director of marketing and sales, Dry Creek Nutrition, Modesto, Calif.
Having GRAS status allows applications for ActiVin to expand from the dietary supplement arena into functional foods and beverages. “Since ActiVin is so versatile, it can be used in any application from beverages to bars to dairy products,” says DeMont. “As a natural antioxidant, ActiVin is being used in beverages at levels ranging from 50-100mg. In cereals, it is being used between 25-50mg. The clinical research has been done and benefits proven on daily dosages ranging from 50-150mg.”
