Some of the most colossal failures in the history of processed foods involved the color of a food product that did not fall in line with consumer expectations. For example, in the early 1990s, Pepsi Cola released Crystal Pepsi, a colorless, caffeine-free cola. The product failed to generate a satisfactory profit because consumers could not relate to a clear soda that tasted like a brown cola.
It could even be said that when a product is widely successful, color seldom is credited for the success. Rarely is a product's coloring consciously noticed by consumers, unless a product is uncommonly or incorrectly colored.
