In Australia, Kellogg’s has announced a 20% reduction in the sodium content of its Corn Flakes and Rice Bubbles. The effort is part of a company plan to reduce sodium by 15% in all its cereals that exceed 400mg of salt per 100g by the end of 2013. It has seen the company gradually reduce the salt content in the Corn Flakes by 36% and Rice Bubbles by 41% over the past 14 years, in an attempt to reduce the sodium levels so gradually that consumers would not notice.
In the EU, member-states have backed a proposal to allow “no added salt/sodium” claims on foods, per EU Food Law. The regulation proposes to revise the list of approved nutrition claims in the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation.
