Allergens, Intolerance and the Moldy Bath Mat

January 27, 2012

I dumped on you last week. I made a pact with myself to keep my personal life out of this forum. This isn't an advice column, is it?
I suppose I am offering advice -- advising -- you to dig in to particular articles and videos on this website. Advise is a strong word. It has an air consequence to it?
"I advise you to change the bath mat today, or else!"
"Or else what?"
"Or else you will have a ring of spongy mold on the floor where the mat used to be."

Who's to say spongy mold on the floor couldn't suffice as a bath mat, one that never needs changing, one that only deepens its cushion-y comfort over time. Can't you feel your toes curling into what appears to be a 4' x 2' rectangle of flat, softened broccoli crowns?
Heaven, I tell you! Heaven!

Now that you are thoroughly disgusted, here's something to brighten your day (but in a way, it still kind of has to do with mold...)

Some articles and video presentations you may have missed focusing on allergens and intolerance:

Certain areas within restrictive diets are growing in popularity, at least from a menu standpoint.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of children with food allergies jumped 18% between 1997-2007, and researchers at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago found 8% of U.S. children under the age of 18 have at least one food allergy.

Some 12 million Americans have food allergies, with another 18 million gluten-sensitive (roughly 3 million having Celiac disease), resulting in a market of roughly 30 million consumers, plus their friends and families.

Among the most active trends in recent years have been allergen-friendly products, and the cereal aisles have been no stranger to these innovations.
