R&D: FDA Gives New Oil O.K. -- June 2009

Formulators have a new, label-friendly ingredient for the formulation of foods with higher ALA omega-3 levels.

HiOmega® flaxseed oil, from Polar Foods, contains 70% omega-3 as alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is 20-30% more omega-3 than other flaxseed oils, according to the company. HiOmega flaxseed oil is cold-pressed, all-natural and a non-GMO vegetable source of the essential omega-3 fatty acid.

On June 10, 2008, Polar Foods submitted a self-affirmed GRAS notification to the FDA (GRN No. 256). The FDA reviewed information on the identity, method of manufacture, specifications, safety, potential for toxicity and health effects of this ingredient. On January 26, 2009, the FDA sent a letter noting it had no questions regarding the ingredient’s use in a variety of applications, such as confectionery, baked goods, beverages, certain dairy products and spreads, among others, as outlined by Polar Foods.

High-linolenic acid flaxseed oil has an increased level of alpha linolenic acid, compared with conventional flaxseed oil (ca. 70% by weight vs. ca. 50% by weight). Peer-reviewed scientific studies have shown consumption of omega-3 in the form of ALA from flaxseed oil has significant cardiovascular health benefits, including reducing the risk of sudden cardiac death. Additional health benefits include anti-cancer effects and protection of bone, kidney and liver health, and maintenance of healthy DHA levels. HiOmega flaxseed oil has a beneficial balance of omega-6: omega-3 (1:7) and a lower level of saturated fat than fish omega-3 oils, reports the company.  pf
