On the Street: New IFT President

On the Street: New IFT President

April 28/Pharma Business Week -- Roger Clemens has been elected president-elect of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Clemens has played an active role in Washington, D.C., voicing his concerns to the White House and Congress about food safety, consumer health and wellness, and global hunger.

"As IFT President-elect, I am committed to energetically, enthusiastically, and effectively represent IFT's critical role in delivering safe and healthful foods to consumers throughout the world," Clemens said.

In addition to his successful career as a scientific advisor for E.T. Horn, Clemens is a member of the USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, where he focuses on food safety and dietary lipids and health. He is also a public member of the American Dietetic Association's Commission on Dietetic Registration, chair of the public information committee within the American Society for Nutrition, and a leader in many other food, nutrition and health organizations.

"Having been a colleague of his for so many years now, I can truly attest that Dr. Clemens will be a true advocate of science-based research for today's food formulations and wellness trends, not only here in America, but anywhere IFT has a presence," said Lisa Alley-Zarkades, vice president of E.T. Horn's FoodTech and Animal Wellness Groups. "He is very deserving of being IFT's next president and will make strong contributions during his tenure. What can I say, he is a legend within our industry."

Clemens is associate director of the Regulatory Science program and adjunct professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences within the USC School of Pharmacy. His career includes an advisory position with Nestle USA that spanned over 20 years. He has published over 50 original manuscripts and participated in more than 200 invited lectures on the topics of food science and nutrition.
