Irish researchers said modified sugars could change the way the body fought disease, regulated sugar levels and stored fat.

The compounds could hold the key to beating cancer, diabetes and help tackle obesity, said chemist Mike Southern.

“We are working on creating sugars that can cause chemical reactions in the body that turn these simple sugars into powerful drugs,” he said. “These sugars offer huge therapeutic potential across a range of different diseases, from cancers to viruses to diabetes…”
