January 2012/Prepared Foods -- While the FDA continues to hem and haw on a standard for gluten-free, new products touting their lack continue to come to market. One of the latest is Simply Potatoes, which boasts “Gluten Free” on its ingredient legend and features a fairly clean label, proclaiming “potatoes, half & half, whole milk, butter, salt, disodium pyrophosphate, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate and sodium bisulfite.” For its part, the FDA’s 60-day comment period on a gluten-free standard ended in October, with no news yet indicating what the agency’s ultimate labeling decision will be.pf
