Consumption of 5g/day and 8g/day of inulin and the impact on changes in bifidobacteria, bacteroides, Clostridia and Lactobacilli/Enterococci composition of human feces was investigated by researchers S. Kolida, D. Meyer and G.R. Gibson. The researchers report that this was the first time a dose response effect of a prebiotic formulated in a processed food product was investigated and demonstrated in healthy human volunteers. A significant increase (at the 95% confidence level) was seen in bifidobacteria levels with a treatment of just 5g/day of inulin.
