January 2012/Prepared Foods -- Mediterranean Snack Foods Company has added Lentil Crackers to its Mediterranean Baked line. Promising to be gluten-free and featuring 6% of the recommended daily allowance of iron, the ingredient legend touts vegetable oil in the form of olive oil and/or sunflower oil and/or palm fruit oil.

Palm oil has been at the center of a heated sustainability debate in parts of Southeast Asia. Nearly 40 million tons were produced in 2007, per the UN Food and Agriculture Association, and the task for suppliers has been to source the oil, without causing irreparable environmental damage. pf
