Energy and/or Sports Performance

“Energy and/or Sports Perfor-mance” is an area of health which has seen a wide range of innovative, new product introductions recently, with some products straddling middle ground to satisfy several consumer needs. Energy drinks in their traditional aluminum cans, for example, are incorporating ingredients such as electrolytes and protein for recovery to appeal to sports participants, as well as traditional energy drink consumers. There also has been a definite shift toward using natural flavors and colors, and real fruit juice where possible, for energy and sports drinks, as well as the emergence of organic lines. The leading functional ingredients for the market category “sports and energy drinks,” according to global product launch activity tracked by the Innova Database for 2011, were caffeine, taurine, vitamin B6, vitamin B3, vitamin B12, niacin, vitamin B2, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium and guarana.

Clear, Complete Protein

CLARISOY is the world’s first plant-based protein that offers clarity and complete protein nutrition for beverage applications. CLARISOY 100 is ADM’s premier isolated soy protein that is transparent in beverage applications with a pH below 4.0. CLARISOY 150, the first extension to the CLARISOY product line, is a clean-tasting, isolated soy protein specially processed for use in beverages with cloud systems or neutral beverages. It allows for greater use of soy protein in mildly flavored, neutral beverages, such as meal replacement and weight management products. Surprise
consumers with refreshingly clear, protein-packed beverages. Consumers won’t believe something so good can also be good for them.  ADM CLARISOY, 800-637-5843, CLARISOY@adm.com, www.CLARISOY.com

Enhance Performance

Vinitrox is a synergistic combination of apple and grape polyphenols showing exceptional sports nutrition properties to enhance physical performances. The latest clinical study on 50 athletes demonstrated that one dose of 500mg of Vinitrox improves physical capacities: It increased physical training time by 10% and delayed the fatigue barrier by 13%. Vinitrox can be used in numerous forms, such as tablets, capsules, gels, etc. Nexira Health USA, Franck Gillet, sales manager, 908-704-7494, f.gillet@nexira.com, www.nexira.com

Caps Off to Fortification

Fortitech is the one-stop source for food, beverage and pharmaceutical manufacturers looking to fortification as a way to differentiate their products. Beverage manufacturers will be interested in Fortitech’s PowerCap. This all-in-one product is an ultra-convenient way to deliver nutrients, flavors, colors, stabilizers and sweeteners in one complete, powdered solution. Housed in a compartment within a cap that fits the top of a water bottle, the premix can be released into a beverage at will. Current samples include: Black Raspberry or Strawberry Kiwi Flavored Relaxation—a relaxation formula that includes an all-natural flavor, zero-calorie sweetener, ashwaganda extract, GABA and L-theanine; and Cranberry Flavored Fatigue Fighter—an energy-boosting blend of B-vitamins and vitamin C, along with all-natural flavor and zero-calorie sweetener. Functional Carbohydrate for Sports and Energy

BENEO offers the functional carbohydrate Palatinose (isomaltulose). It is perfect for energy and sports performance products, due to its unique vital function, offering benefits such as: It is digested fully, yet slowly, and supplies the body with the full energy of carbohydrates over a longer period of time; generates a much lower effect on blood glucose levels compared to higher glycemic carbohydrates, including sweeteners; and promotes the body’s own fat oxidation (fat burning) during physical activity, as well as during rest. Additionally, being low-hygroscopic, Palatinose can easily be used in instant drinks, without lumping.  In contrast to sucrose, it remains stable under acidic conditions and does not change the isotonic or hypotonic properties of beverages. Palatinose occurs naturally in, for example, honey and sugar cane syrup. Larger quantities are derived exclusively from beet sugar. It has a pure, mild and sugar-like taste, but is less sweet than sugar and has no aftertaste. BENEO Inc., 973-867-2140, info.usa@beneo.com, www.beneo.com

Prolonged Protein Release with Caseinates

Farbest Brands offers a broad range of Westland’s specialty dairy ingredients, including caseinates. Rich in essential amino acids, caseinates promote muscle growth and repair with a low fat content. Caseinates are slowly digested proteins, resulting in a slower, yet more prolonged, rise in blood levels of amino acids, which support muscle growth over a longer period of time. These caseinates are easily dispersable, with a clean flavor, making them an excellent pre-workout choice when formulated in sports drink powders, ready-to-drink beverages and nutrition bars. Originating in New Zealand, the caseinates are RBST-free. Farbest Brands, Lorna Samgour, 201-573-4900, lsamgour@farbest.com, www.farbest.com

Accelerate Recovery

Bioenergy Ribose is an all-natural ingredient that provides functional benefits and is widely used in food, beverage and nutrition products for energy enhancement, recovery and endurance. Ribose is the rate-limiting step in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)—the source for all cellular energy and tissue repair. For the serious athlete, recovery time is vital.  Intense exercise drains muscle energy pools, contributing to muscle soreness, fatigue and loss of peak performance.  For those who exercise more sporadically, prolonged muscle soreness and fatigue can be unbearable. Ribose is clinically proven to help accelerate energy recovery, reduce muscle stiffness and maintain high levels of energy—to increase endurance for optimal performance. Bioenergy Ribose is the only ribose solution to receive a GRAS affirmation, no questions letter from the Food and Drug Administration. It is kosher- and halal-certified, non-GMO and has an extensive portfolio of patents, backing its energy claims with clinical research. Bioenergy Life Science Inc., Penny Portner, 763-746-3926, penny.portner@bioenergyls.com

Reduce Fat, Increase Muscle Recovery

Clarinol is a patent-protected conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) that reduces body fat and increases lean body mass. Clarinol is used in many energy and sports products to fuel muscles, enhance performance and training, and promote muscle recovery.  Clarinol contains the highest concentration of the two active CLA isomers, c9,t11 and t10,c12. Neobee medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are healthy oils that quickly convert to energy in the body to enhance sports performance. Readily absorbed, low in calories and non-trans fat, they are used as solubilizers for flavors, colors and bioactives. Stepan Lipid Nutrition, in the Americas: 800-457-7673, food.health@stepan.com; in Europe: +31 (0) 75-727-1000, info@lipidnutrition.com, www.stepan.com

Help for Athletes, Weekend Warriors

Lonza is a leading manufacturer of L-carnitine sold under the brand name Carnipure. A nutritional ingredient, Carnipure enables the generation of energy from fat by transporting long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria.  An increasing body of research shows that Carnipure aids exercise performance, helping elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. It can help support muscle recovery after exercise and help support normal tissue repair processes. The proprietary and fully backward-integrated Carnipure production process was invented by Lonza scientists in Switzerland. It directly produces the L-isomer of carnitine, the form found in nature. Carnipure tartrate and Carnipure crystalline are self-affirmed GRAS for use in conventional foods as a dietary source of L-carnitine. Both are bright white, pH- and heat-stable, highly water-soluble and form colorless solutions. They can be used in dietary supplements in the form of tablets, capsules and powders, as well as in beverages, bars, dairy and other food products.  Lonza, Thomas Brancato, tom.brancato@lonza.com, www.lonza.com   NS
