At Vitafoods Europe, mineral ingredients manufacturer and specialty distributor Omya will launch Omyaforte, a highly bioavailable source of calcium suitable for powdered and compressed formulations that target the increasingly aging global population. In addition, the company will showcase its solutions for calcium-rich infant nutrition and its directly compressible calcium carbonate range, Calcipur® DC. Matching vitamins from the distribution portfolio complete the company’s offerings.

Vitafoods Europe 2020 visitors can find Omya at Booth #K273.

For many people, particularly those who avoid dairy products, it can be difficult to achieve an adequate calcium intake. In addition, during adolescence, the body requires more calcium to build strong bones. Postmenopausal women and men over the age of 70 also need more calcium to help slow down bone loss. For these groups, calcium supplements can be helpful.

Better bioavailability

Omyaforte is a highly efficient, bioavailable source of calcium with enhanced solubility. It is composed of calcium carbonate and tricalcium phosphate—combining the best properties of both. Compared to reference products, Omyaforte, which has been entered in the “Healthy Aging” category of the NutraIngredients Awards at Vitafoods, offers a higher elemental calcium content and greater bioavailability.

This results in better calcium uptake in the bloodstream. The ingredient targets the nutraceuticals and fortified foods market, and is suitable for powdered as well as compressed formulations, such as tablets. Due to the increasingly ageing global population and prevalence of osteoporosis, the demand for calcium supplements and calcium-fortified foods will continue to grow.

High-purity calcium source for infant nutrition

Furthermore, Omya will present Calcipur® 115-KP and 95-KP, two grades of natural calcium carbonate for infant formula, at the show. With very fine particles, they enhance powdered milk products, instant drinks and other forms of infant nutrition in a safe and healthy way. Furthermore, Omya Calcipur® KP contains approximately 40% calcium and is therefore able to boost the calcium content of the end product, thus supporting the nutritional requirements of babies and toddlers.

Improved flow and compactability

The Calcipur® DC range comprises seven different grades of high-purity, directly compressible and free-flowing natural calcium carbonates. Thanks to improved processing properties, the ingredient is ideally suited for the production of calcium-containing dietary supplements, such as tablets, capsules and stick packs. It can be used as an active ingredient in nutraceuticals and as a diluent in pharmaceuticals.

Last but not least, Omya will showcase its distribution portfolio of water- and fat-soluble vitamins for all-round healthy products. For instance, vitamins K2 and D3 partner beautifully with calcium in bone health supplements, whereas vitamin B12 is suitable for cognitive and immune health concepts.
