Merit is producing its ingredients using Burcon NutraScience’s 20-years-in-progress patented protein extraction technology.

Merit’s product portfolio currently consists of three product family offerings: pea, non-GMO canola, and MeritPro™, a unique lineup of nutrionally complete proteins. Its entire portfolio aligns with a number of consumer label concerns, including allergen-free, gluten-free, non-dairy, non-GMO, and vegan.

Construction of the company’s 94,000-square foot production facility in Winnipeg began in fall 2019. The company will begin assembling the superstructure soon, with the entire facility scheduled to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2020. The state-of-the-art facility will be the first and only commercial facility with the capability to produce food-grade canola protein.

To demonstrate its capabilities, Merit’s R&D team has developed innovative bar prototypes—containing 20g of plant-based protein per serving—made with MeritPro to demonstrate the ingredient’s positive impact on texture and mouthfeel. While many whey- and plant-based bars on the market with high protein content suffer from a sandy, chalky, or coarse mouthfeel, MeritPro’s impressive solubility allows

formulators to overcome those textural challenges while still delivering on a high protein content. 

MeritPro ingredients have a Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) of 1.0, with the highest purity at over 90% protein.

Still more on-trend prototypes are plant-based beverages made with Peazazz®, the company’s high purity, uniquely soluble pea protein isolate that eliminates the undesirable taste attributes that plague whey, dairy, and other popular protein sources.
