Since forming their alliance, both companies saw creamers as a growth opportunity and leveraged Nestlé’s more than 50 year expertise in the creamer category and Starbucks nearly 50 year heritage and well-loved coffee house flavors.

The agreement significantly strengthens Nestlé’s coffee portfolio in the North American premium roast and ground and portioned coffee business. It also unlocks global expansion in grocery and foodservice for the Starbucks brand, using the global reach of Nestlé.  

As part of the alliance, Nestlé will obtain the rights to market, sell, and distribute Starbucks®, Seattle’s Best Coffee®, Starbucks Reserve®, Teavana™, Starbucks VIA® and Torrefazione Italia® packaged coffee and tea in all global at-home and away-from-home channels. Nestlé will pay Starbucks $7.15 billion in closing consideration, and Starbucks – with a focus on long-term shareholder value creation – will retain a significant stake as licensor and supplier of roast and ground and other products going forward. Additionally, the Starbucks brand portfolio will be represented on Nestlé’s single-serve capsule systems.

Starbucks chief Howard Schultz announced that he was stepping down as CEO of the company, effective April 2017. Schultz plans on staying on board as executive chairman, turning the CEO reins over to Starbucks President and COO Kevin Johnson.
