ESHA Research: Added Sugar Data

In advance new FDA labeling rules, ESHA Research has populated many US database foods with added sugar information

With the latest release of Genesis R&D Food Formulation & Labeling software and The Food Processor Nutrition Analysis & Fitness software, ESHA Research has implemented added-sugar data.

In anticipation of the new FDA labeling rules, ESHA’s nutrition research department has populated many US database foods with added sugar information, per the added sugar definition outlined in the FDA proposed labeling changes. Approximately 12,000 foods now have added-sugar values. These foods include:

• "Plain" fruits, vegetables, grain, dairy that contain natural sugar but not added sugar. For these foods, added sugar is zero.
• Foods that do not contain sugar. If total sugar is zero, added sugar is zero.
• Foods like sugar and honey that meet the definition of added sugar. For these foods, added sugar is equal to the total sugar value.

These additions mean that current users of ESHA's food analysis programs will have less work when preparing to comply with the new FDA regulations when they come out.

“Genesis will be updated with the new labeling regulations, whenever they come out,” says Product Manager Josh Luth. “If you subscribe to our Priority Support program, you will receive the updates automatically.”

The FDA is proposing that added sugars be included on the label to make consumers more aware and to encourage them to consider the added sugar content when choosing foods. If the proposed changes pass, added sugar will be on the label as a subset of total sugar, displaying that portion of the total sugar that was added to the product during processing.
