The fund announcement comes on the heels of the landmark USDA approval of cell-cultivated meat to US consumers last week.

The moment for the burgeoning cultivated meat, poultry and seafood sector, and for the global food industry, comes on the heels of the USDA’s approval of GOOD Meat’s label – and four months after the company received its “no questions” letter from the US Food and Drug Administration.

With an approved label in hand, UPSIDE Foods is now working with USDA to obtain a Grant of Inspection (GOI) for its Engineering, Production, and Innovation Center (EPIC), the last remaining item in the pre-market regulatory process before the company can commercially produce and sell its cultivated chicken in the United States. 

Alternative proteins, which include cultivated, plant-based, and fermentation-derived proteins, represent an opportunity to reduce risks and improve the efficiency of meat production, while offering consumers the meat-eating experience they crave. Rethinking how meat is made can decrease emissions, protect human health, ensure food security for all, and maintain and improve biodiversity. Good Food Institute is calling on governments around the world to invest $10 billion each year in R&D and commercialization to deliver the full benefits of protein diversification.

UPSIDE announced that it has developed a breakthrough chicken cell line for use in suspension cell culture that could substantially reduce the cost of production for these ground meat products.

With the introduction of the latest version of GOOD Meat’s cultivated chicken, the family-owned and operated business adds a new, locally produced offering to its display case and bistro menu.

BELIEVER is making an initial planned investment of $123.35 million in Wilson County, located approximately 40 miles east of Raleigh, N.C., and includes plans to create over 100 new jobs over the next three years.
