Less Red in the Face
A new, “nutricosmetic” study has found daily oral supplementation with Lyc-O-Mato®, a natural, lycopene complex extracted from red ripe tomatoes, will enhance the protective properties of the skin against environmental stress and reduce premature aging and wrinkles. According to LycoRed Corp, “A Lyc-O-Mato capsule consumed in the morning, with breakfast, may be an easy and effective way to help protect skin from the damaging effects of UV radiation that can lead to premature aging or even skin cancer.” In the study, subjects who received daily supplements of Lyc-O-Mato and were exposed to UVB and UVA radiation were found to have significantly fewer sunburn skin cells, compared to the placebo group. Fewer sunburn cells indicated less skin damage, which can manifest itself in premature aging, wrinkles or even skin cancer. LycoRed Corp., 917-776-5216, www.lycored.com

Thanks for the Memory
An ingredient for brain support, Cereboost™, from Naturex, has been granted the NutrAward 2010 for Best New Ingredient of the year. Taking place during the Nutracon conference and co-located with Natural Products Expo West, NutrAward celebrates innovation and supports companies that are investing in evidence-based ingredients. Naturex developed Cereboost for its activity on cognitive performance. It benefits from the first clinical study confirming the traditional use of American ginseng for brain health. Subjects supplemented with Cereboost experienced significant improvement in the areas of working memory and alertness, says the company. Naturex, France, + 33 (0)4 90 23 96 89, www.naturex.com

Super Fruit Powder
In the past year, Nutraceuticals International® LLC has added numerous new ingredients to its extensive line of products, including flavors, spices and grains, Superfruits and over 200 kosher-certified ingredients. One of the ingredients, Baozene™, is a purified baobab fruit powder from partner Amruta Herbals Pvt. Ltd. Baozene is a great source of dietary fiber, claims Nutraceuticals, with a high ORAC value of 650µmol Te/g, and it contains high levels of potassium, vitamin C, calcium and iron. Amruta has standardized the Baozene to a 70% fiber content, which contains water-soluble polysaccharides with excellent binding properties. Nutraceuticals International LLC, www.baozene.com

Winning Combination
Solae LLC announced a review, published in a supplement accompanying the current issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, which concludes consuming a blend of proteins (isolated soy protein, whey protein and casein) may have advantages for sports performance and provides nutritional advantages over consuming just one type of protein. The review shows not only the importance of protein, but also the potential benefits of combining different proteins, particularly to help promote recovery after exercise activity. More and more sports nutrition bars and RTD beverages are including blends of soy and dairy protein. Solae’s SUPRO®XF, an isolated soy protein, in combination with a dairy protein, has been shown to be preferred by consumers 2:1, over the leading dairy commercial brand, claims Solae. Shedding Fat
A novel, patent-pending, synergistic composition of brown seaweed extract, standardized for fucoxanthin, and pomegranate seed oil, standardized for punicic acid, is now available. Xanthigen, from PL Thomas, helps the liver to shed stored fats, improving metabolic function and energy expenditure, says the company. Additionally, Xanthigen supports healthy body fat reduction. A recent clinical study with Xanthigen suggests “unclogging” the liver may play an essential role in the fight against excess body fat. It is thought that promoting liver and body fat reduction results in a healthier body, overall. PL Thomas, www.plthomas.com   NS
