July 2011/Prepared Foods -- Products with high protein content may not be enjoying the same level of success they did during the low-carb diet fad of a few years ago, but a study published in the May 12 issue of the journal Obesity found a protein-rich breakfast can increase feelings of satiety and reduce hunger throughout the day. Specifically, the study indicated, “a healthy breakfast containing protein-rich foods can be a simple strategy for people to stay satisfied longer and, therefore, be less prone to snacking.” Indeed, there has been something of a surge of protein-rich products on store shelves.

The latest is from Abbott, which has added Sweet & Salty nutrition bars to its ZonePerfect line. Available in Cashew Pretzel and Trail Mix varieties, each bar promises 10g of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals, and to be rich in antioxidants (vitamins C and E, as well as selenium). pf
