Although they say appearances can be deceiving, there’s no mistaking a healthy natural and organic food sector. Consider that this year’s Natural Products Expo West drew more than 65,000 registered attendees and as many as 3,000 exhibiting companies.
Addressing NatExpo’s opening “state of the industry” New Hope Media and SPINS representatives noted that while inflation and foodservice growth slowed consumer packaged good sales, packaged natural and organic product sales in 2022 hit $111.5 billion in sales, a 7.2% year-over-year increase according to SPINS data. Meanwhile, total related sales—including supplements and functional foods and beverages—are projected to surpass more than $300 billion in 2023.
Fueling this growth is steadily rising consumer interest in health and wellness. Moreover, natural and organic products are fitting consumer demand for healthier snacking, “functional” beverages as medicine, sustainability, and a new generation of plant-forward and/or plant-based meat and dairy alternatives.
