Global new product activity featuring a specific weight management positioning has been relatively static in recent years. Innova Market Insights has however recorded a sharp rise in launch numbers in 2013. Activity in related claims, such as low calorie and low fat, which are much more frequently used, show similar growth. Both low calorie and low fat product launches tracked in 2013 exceeded the number of launches tracked in previous years.

Claims relating to sugar content (sugar-free, low sugar and no-added-sugar) have increased consistently in recent years. A sudden spike of growth in launches was tracked for no-added-sugar claims. Product categories using a specific weight management positioning are being led by cereal products (over 17%), ahead of ready meals, soft drinks and hot drinks (predominately tea).

Fiber is increasingly used as an ingredient for weight management, as is protein, while more specialist ingredients include oligofructose, L-carnitine and green tea catechin.

Almonds Aid Weight Loss

A new study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that a mid-morning snack of almonds helped control appetite and resulted in reduced calorie intake by the participants, 32 healthy women, during the rest of the day. The study suggests that almonds may be a smart snack option given they acutely enhanced satiety without increasing total daily calorie consumption. This new, short-term study joins longer-term studies that indicate that eating almonds does not lead to significant changes in body weight in both healthy people and those at increased risk of diabetes. The nutrient profile of almonds – low on the glycemic index and providing a powerful nutrient package in 160 calories per ounce, including hunger-fighting protein (6g), filling dietary fiber (4g), “good” fats[7] (13g), and important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, magnesium and potassium (200mg), makes them a satisfying snack.—Almond Board of California, www.almonds.com.

Dihydrocapsiate

CapsiAtra is a dihydrocapsiate compound naturally found in CH-19 sweet peppers. It is 1,000 times less pungent than capsaicin yet promotes similar clinical benefits in weight management and endurance. CapsiAtra is a weight management formulation solution for two reasons. It helps increase resting energy expenditure (REE) by allowing the body to burn off more calories than normal. CapsiAtra also stimulates thermogenesis, which helps the body burn calories off from stored fats. Glanbia Nutritionals offers the premier portfolio of innovative, clinically-driven specialty nutritional ingredient solutions. Combined with extensive expertise in custom premix, Glanbia Nutritionals is a complete fortification partner uniquely positioned to support the needs of fast-moving nutritional companies. —Glanbia Nutritionals, www.glanbianutritionals.com

Whole Grain Satiety

The WEIGHTAIN satiety system, Ingredion’s proprietary whole-grain-based weight management solution, gives processors a clinically proven way to create natural weight management products. WEIGHTAIN manages weight through satiety effect, suppressing hunger to reduce calorie intake by about 50-100 calories a day. WEIGHTAIN is a naturally based, gluten-free whole grain-hydrocolloid system. WEIGHTAIN is easy to disperse and mix into bars, snacks, soups and baked goods formulas. It is also shown to provide thickness and body to instant smoothies.—Ingredion Incorporated www.ingredion.com

Zero-Calorie Sweetener

Consumer taste-test research reveals Tate & Lyle’s TASTEVA Stevia Sweetener is preferred by nearly two out of three consumers (63%) over rebaudioside A, a prevalent stevia ingredient often associated with bitter aftertastes. TASTEVA is a zero-calorie sweetener that meets consumer demand for low-calorie and low-sugar products and achieves 50% or more sugar-reduction levels. TASTEVA also is easy to incorporate in a wide range of foods and beverages. “Consumers are demanding low-sugar and low-calorie products but taste is always going to be their top priority,” says Amy Lauer, marketing manager, North America. “With TASTEVA, manufacturers can meet that demand with a lower cost in use because masking ingredients aren’t necessary.”—Tate & Lyle, www.tateandlyle.com

Reduce Body Fat

Clarinol CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) has been proven to help to reduce body fat, improve body composition and increase lean body mass, which includes muscle. Clarinol products are available in liquid, ready-to-use emulsion and powdered forms, offering even more ways to integrate the weight-management benefits of CLA into dietary supplements and food products. Clarinol CLA improves body composition by influencing the enzymes involved in fat metabolism. It also appears to interact with cell receptors, activating responses that lead to a reduction in the amount of fat that the body stores. CLA also increases the activity of an enzyme that stimulates the body’s breakdown of fats. This means that CLA both reduces the storage of fat and, at the same time, causes what fat there is to be burned at a higher rate. The result is an overall reduction in the body’s fat mass and an increase in lean body mass.

Natural Sweetener

Blue California has devoted significant R&D to natural sweeteners as alternatives to sugar and artificial sweeteners. Good&Sweet is 400 times sweeter than sugar, offers great taste, excellent solubility, stability and zero calories. This ingredient can be produced in different concentrations to meet the required sweetness for flavors, beverages and a variety of food applications. Good&Sweet Reb-A 99% is derived from the stevia leaf has FDA GRAS confirmation (2009), kosher, halal and BRC certificates. This stevia extract meets the US and European requirements for naturalness. The manufacturing process involves a physical extraction using water and ethanol and ultra-
filtration, a physical process, to achieve the required purity. Good&Sweet Reb-A 99% is 100% pure and natural. It is not a blend and contains no erythritol.—Blue California, www.bluecal-ingredients.com

Consume Fewer Calories

BENEO’s chicory root fiber inulin and oligofructose are natural and non-GMO.  They are ingredients of choice in all natural reformulations where sugar, fat or caloric reduction is required while maintaining taste and texture. Compared to fully available, high glycemic carbohydrates, prebiotic fibers from chicory provide only 1.5kcal/g. Scientific studies show that inulin and oligofructose help people consume fewer calories and better control energy intake while they increase fiber intake. BENEO’s functional carbohydrate Palatinose is the only fully, yet slowly digestible carbohydrate which is low glycemic, providing energy in a balanced and longer lasting way. These physiological properties are relevant for the general population. The results of a recent scientific study also shows that the low glycemic characteristics have a beneficial effect on fat utilization in overweight and obese people.—BENEO, Inc., www.beneo.com

Carb Control

Phase 2 Carb Controller is an extract of the white kidney bean backed by extensive clinical research proving its efficacy and safety.  A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 40 overweight human subjects showed that those who took a supplement containing Phase 2 for 12 weeks, experienced statistically significant weight loss and BMI reduction. Another double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 60 human subjects who took Phase 2 lost an average of 6.45lbs in 30 days, compared to those on placebo, who lost less than 1lb, on average. Those participants on Phase 2 also lost, on average, over 10% of body fat mass, and more than 3% in waist circumference. There was no loss of lean body mass. Phase 2 is the only white kidney bean extract with two structure/function claims for starch digestion and weight control. Phase 2 is all natural, GRAS, contains no stimulants, and no adverse side effects have been reported in studies. Phase 2 is manufactured in the U.S. from a non-GMO plant source. It can be incorporated into a wide variety of foods.

Sugar Reduction

With its new ViaTech portfolio, Cargill builds upon previous stevia-based sweetener technologies by improving taste performance at high usage levels. Cargill scientists have spent hundreds of thousands of hours working with the stevia leaf to understand how different steviol glycosides work alone and in combination. Cargill also uses a proprietary taste prediction model, which helps achieve clean sweetness in zero-calorie and reduced-calorie food and beverage formulations. “Cargill designed the ViaTech ingredients to deliver an optimal sweet taste at high use levels, which has been a limitation with previous stevia-based products,” says Scott Fabro, global business development director, Cargill Corn Milling North America.—Cargill Foods, www. www.cargillfoods.com/viatech.

Psyllium Fiber

BI Nutraceuticals’ Psyllium Fiber is a light beige powder from the seed husks of the plant, Plantago ovata, native to India. BI’s psyllium contains up to 90% dietary fiber, making it one of the richest fiber sources. Fiber helps with cancer, diabetes, digestive health, heart health, and weight management. Psyllium specifically helps with weight management by increasing satiety. When psyllium is hydrated, it absorbs the water, swells, and becomes viscous. When the gel-like material referred to as mucilage is compared to one formed by starch, psyllium is far more efficient producing the same effect at a use level of 1.5% (w/v) compared to a simple starch at 10%(w/v). It is also considered a low carbohydrate grain since it contains more fiber by volume than other grains, resulting in less “room” for dietary carbohydrates and less net carbs overall. Psyllium also enhances mouthfeel, increases viscosity, provides structure, replaces fat and retains moisture. It’s ideal for weight management bars and shakes.—BI Nutraceuticals, www.botanicals.com

Weight Loss Solutions

DuPont Nutrition & Health has a number of weight management ingredient solutions, which can be used alone or in combination. Litesse polydextrose is a soluble prebiotic fiber that is low calorie and has a low glycemic response. Other benefits include: calorie reduction and satiety enhancement. FIBRIM soy fiber, a non-digestible polysaccharide fiber, helps to enhance satiety and reduce energy intake. The reduced calorie sweeteners XIVIA Xylitol and Lactitol have benefits that include calorie reduction and sugar reduction. Protein solutions (soy protein) have benefits that include satiety, weight loss and body composition (increase of fat loss, decrease of lean muscle mass loss).—DuPont Nutrition & Health, www.danisco.com

Nutritional Beverages

Caloric reduction and fat reduction can be achieved by utilizing Solka-Floc, JustFiber, and NutraFiber to replace excess bulk without compromising quality and other important sensory considerations. The result are great-tasting, low-calorie, high fiber nutritional beverages. Product consistency and other important consumer sensory considerations are not affected by the addition of IFC’s quality products. These clean label ingredients can add bulk, boost fiber content and provide caloric density control. Due to its nutritional nature (insoluble fiber content of more than 99% dwb), Solka-Floc and JustFiber are considered to contribute zero calories and carbohydrates. It exists as a white, flavorless, and odorless powder and these properties enhance its suitability as a non-caloric bulking agent as well as an excellent source of dietary fiber for use in numerous food products.—International Fiber Corporation, www.ifcfiber.com

Dietary Fibers

Sensus used this year’s IFT show in New Orleans to highlight Frutalose SF75. Development work has shown the ability of this low caloric and natural ingredient to significantly reduce sugar in a multitude of applications, including sweet baked goods, dairy and cereal bars. Sensus’ Frutafit inulin and Frutalose  oligo-fructose are prebiotic ingredients that promote digestive health by enriching the fiber content of food. These ingredients have a low caloric value and are ideal as sugar and fat replacers. They also contribute to satiety, making them a very useful tool for weight management.

Low-Cal Sweetener System

Batory Foods has become a select distributor of Celanese Corporation’s Qorus sweetener system. Developed by Celanese, Qorus balances flavor and sweetness while masking off notes. This helps manufacturers develop low- and no-calorie foods and beverages that taste as authentic as their full-calorie counterparts. Qorus functions in a variety of processing conditions and is designed for no- and low-calorie carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, flavored waters, energy and juice-based drinks, dairy products, cocktails and many more applications. Batory offers Qorus in two platforms: Dolce 1100 (30% to 70% sugar reduction) and Dolce 2100 (50% to 100% sugar reduction).

Green Coffee Bean

Svetol, developed by Naturex, is a natural plant extract of decaffeinated green coffee. It is derived from 100% unroasted premium Robusta beans that have undergone a proprietary extraction process and possess a unique composition that offers the benefits of green coffee in a plant extract and helps spur weight loss. The Ipsos study found that respondents were most impressed by Svetol’s safety, quality, and efficacy. Svetol is a 100% all-natural plant concentrate, has no side effects and contains less caffeine than a quarter cup of coffee. Svetol differs from other green coffee beans because its traditional extraction process ensures a well-balanced chlorogenic acids profile, unlike most green coffee bean extracts on the market that primarily focus on one particular acid. Studies show that these compounds support weight loss by slowing down the absorption of sugars in the bloodstream, ultimately increasing the burning of fat.—Naturex, www.naturex.com or www.svetol.com.

Reduce Body Fat

When people consume fat that the body does not need to use for energy, it is absorbed by fat cells with the help of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) blocks this enzyme and diverts unused fat to muscle cells. CLA then activates another enzyme, which helps muscle to burn this fat, especially during exercise. Sourced from natural safflower oil, BASF’s Tonalin CLA is natural and environmentally sustainable. Clinical studies show that Tonalin CLA reduces body fat four ways: it decreases the amount of fat a body stores after eating; it increases rate of fat break-down; it increases rate of fat metabolism; and decreases total number of fat cells. Tonalin is the world’s most carefully researched CLA, with currently 18 major studies proving its safety and effectiveness. Tonalin also has earned FDA GRAS approval.—BASF Nutrition & Health, www.newtrition.basf.com or www.tonalin.com

Cut Calories

Jungbunzlauer’s ERYLITE Stevia is a unique natural sweetening system based on the bulk sweetener ERYLITE and the stevia extract Rebaudioside A. Free from calories, it provides a sugar-like bulk, sweetness and taste. The plant-based origin of Rebaudioside A and the fermentation origin of ERYLITE makes ERYLITE Stevia fully natural. ERYLITE Stevia finds application in foods and beverages – for tasty sugar and calorie reduction. ERYLITE Stevia occurs as colorless crystals of high purity. It is an odorless substance with a sweet taste. It is freely soluble in water. ERYLITE Stevia is non-toxic and has a low reactivity. It is chemically stable if stored at ambient temperatures. It is not hygroscopic. ERYLITE Stevia is non-cariogenic and has a zero glycaemic index. ERYLITE Stevia is offered in different types, having different levels of sweetness.—Jungbunzlauer, www.jungbunzlauer.com
