Bone & Joint Health

Bone and joint health claims were featured on less than 1% of global food and drinks launches in 2013. Bone health was by far the more popular claim to make, used on 89% of the total, compared with 16% for joint health, indicating that some products carried both types of claim. Besides products with actual bone health claims, a similar number used “added calcium” claims, relying on consumer awareness of the link between calcium and bone health.

Where dairy was the leading category in 2012, in 2013 baby food led in terms of products featuring bone health claims. Forty-one percent of products tracked with a bone health claim were baby food products, 9.3% of total baby food products. Dairy still leads in products with “added calcium” claims. Pet food was the major contributor (81%) of joint health products tracked.

Apple Extract, Powder

AppleActiv harvests the health benefits of polyphenol-rich apple peels to create extracts and powders. AppleActiv DAPP (Dried Apple Peel Powder) is an all-natural ingredient, made from organic dried apple peels with scientific research that demonstrates its effectiveness in supporting joint comfort and a healthy range of motion. The high level of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in AppleActiv DAPP work together to help keep inflammation within the healthy range, fight oxidative stress and quench free radical activity in order to provide significant joint health benefits. While most polyphenols have a bitter taste that requires masking, AppleActiv DAPP is a neutral-tasting, easy-to-use powder. This very fine powder (100 mesh) is GRAS and works well in supplements and food applications, including smoothies, bars, dry powders and marinades.—AppleActiv, www.appleactiv.com

Natural Bone Support

Bonolive is a natural ingredient derived from olives supporting healthy bones. This patent-protected ingredient is a true innovation for natural bone support and a valuable addition to any bone health regimen.  Lugo Nutrition distributes Bonolive for BioActor and Ferrer HealthTech for use in supplments and functional foods.—Lugo Nutrition Inc., www.lugonutrition.com, www.bonolive.com

Vitamin K2

MenaQ7 PURE is a nature-identical synthetic vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 (MK-7), the first-in-class and only clinically researched Vitamin K2 (MK7). Supported by a global IP portfolio and revolutionary research substantiating clear efficacy for bone and cardiovascular health, MenaQ7 PURE helps the body to inhibit and “clean up” calcium build-up in the arteries while it promotes arterial flexibility and is the optimal solution to utilize calcium binding to the bones.  Combined with an extensive expertise in custom premix, Glanbia Nutritionals is a complete fortification partner uniquely positioned to support the needs of fast-moving nutritional companies.

Collagen Peptides

It’s estimated that $3.5 billion is spent annually on bone and/or joint claims in United States. However, with the oldest Boomer population turning 70, and the first of the 80+ million Gen-Xers entering their 50s, this number is expected to double by 2030. Collagen peptides stimulate collagen synthesis, provide building blocks for the collagen in joints and prevent cartilage degradation. Multiple studies show supplemental collagen peptides are highly effective at mitigating arthritic joint pain and even reversing the breakdown of joints. Collagen peptides are a clear protein source, easily absorbed and digested and pure at more than 90% protein. With minimal or neutral taste and odor, plus cold-water solubility and heat stability, they can be easily applied to functional foods and beverages.—Nitta Gelatin NA Inc., www.nitta-gelatin.com

Patented Mineral Complex

The Journal of Aging Research and Clinical Practice published results of a successful human clinical study on FruiteX-B Calcium Fructoborate, a patented mineral complex from FutureCeuticals. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined effects of FruiteX-B with a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin—versus glucosamine and chondroitin alone—on joint health and flexibility. Over 14 days, subjects in the FruiteX-B, glucosamine, and chondroitin group experienced a 24% improvement in WOMAC scores and a 25% improvement in McGill scores.  Subjects taking the glucosamine/chondroitin combination alone did not experience any significant improvements. “With an advantageous serving size and price, FruiteX-B is capable of delivering the now requisite ‘take-it, feel-it’ experience while enhancing the sustained, slower-onset, long-term relief afforded by the stand-by ingredients,” says Hartley Pond, vice president of sales.—FutureCeuticals Inc. www.futureceuticals.com

Joint Health

PNI’s Celadrin is comprised of innovative, targeted and proprietary cetylated fatty acid esters and other active synergists. It’s a proprietary natural compound that’s scientifically designed to be absorbed rapidly and provide immediate and continuous results. Celadrin has been clinically shown to reduce joint discomfort.  Human studies have shown extensive reduction in pain and swelling and increased range of motion with Celadrin, with no reported side effects. Research has shown that the special fatty acids in Celadrin inhibit inflammation in endothelial cells and decrease the pro-
inflammatory effects of arachidonic and other fatty acids. Celadrin has also been shown to reduce the production of the negative immune factor IL-6 and to control the immune factors responsible for inflammation. –Proprietary Nutritionals Inc., www.pnibrands.com

Collagen Peptides with Calcium

Nutritional supplementation for people with osteoporosis has long been focused on calcium, vitamin D and recently vitamin K. However, all these approaches are addressing the calcium deficiency only. Calcium builds bone density but collagen builds the frame work for calcium to attach to. It is more like the skyscraper. Collagen is the steel frame, while calcium is the cement. AIDP’s patented KoACT collagen form is essential to improving bone flexibility, which helps bones absorb impact. Without it, even the strongest bones can crack, shatter or break, and running, jumping and other activities become painful. Although the body produces collagen naturally, its production diminishes with age. KoACT is a compound of collagen peptides and calcium. This unique ingredient was found to increase both bone strength and bone mineral density in a preclinical animal studies and a completed human study. It’s ideal in functional food applications such as bars.—AIDP Inc., www.aidp.com

Cartilage Growth

With FORTIGEL, GELITA has developed an innovative ingredient for the regeneration of joint cartilage. The protein collagen makes up some 70% of cartilage mass. The optimized specific collagen peptides of FORTIGEL have been proven to stimulate the growth of new cartilage by stimulating cells helping to relieve joint pain and make the joints smooth and mobile. FORTIGEL is a natural protein of neutral odor and taste that can be easily integrated into many applications. It provides excellent solubility and delivers clear solutions without interacting with other ingredients. FORTIGEL can enhance dairy products, functional food, dietary supplements and drinks.—Gelita AG, www.gelita.com

Vegetarian Glucosamine

A long time popular dietary supplement, glucosamine is available as an easy-to-incorporate vegetarian ingredient within dozens of food and beverage applications. Cargill’s Regenasure glucosamine is the only vegetarian GRAS glucosamine produced in the U.S.
Regenasure glucosamine is a shellfish free, vegetarian glucosamine ingredient, certified kosher pareve and kosher for Passover.
