A new clinical trial study suggests that FenuLife®, marketed by Frutarom Inc., as an aid to improve blood glucose response, is also a safe alternative to pharmaceutical acid-reflux and heartburn medications.

The main symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux are a burning sensation in the chest or throat (heartburn) and acid indigestion (reflux), when fluid is propelled up the esophagus to the back of throat. A two-week clinical trial conducted by DiSilvestro, et al, and published in Phytotherapy Research (2010) consisted of 45 subjects suffering from heartburn on average of 3-8 times per week. All subjects were randomly allocated to a FenuLife group, (500mg per capsule, four capsules taken twice daily), placebo group (four starch capsules taken twice daily) or an OTC control group (ranitidine, 75 mg, twice daily). At the end of the trial, results were compared to baseline and showed significant, similar effects for FenuLife fenugreek fiber and the OTC antacid control group.

FenuLife is shown to simultaneously reduce both frequency and severity of acid reflux and heartburn. It is a naturally sourced, unique galactomannan ingredient manufactured from deodorized fenugreek and containing more than 75% soluble fiber. Because of its unique molecular structure, FenuLife resists enzymatic degradation in the stomach maintaining its therapeutic properties. FenuLife was originally developed for and has been proven in previous clinical trials to improve the blood glucose response.“The results clearly suggest that naturally derived FenuLife is a safe and effective alternative with comparable benefits to pharmaceutical acid reflux/heartburn medications,” says Laurent Leduc, VP of the Health Division and Marketing for Frutarom USA.

FenuLife employs a triple mechanism to fight heartburn and acid reflex: first is an anti-reflux effect that prevents the viscous mass from seeping back up the esophagus to the throat (reflux). The second is an antisecretory effect to inhibit excessive acid production in the stomach. Finally, it has an anti-ulcer effect via galactomannans, which form a gel-like layer on the surface of the stomach wall acting as a barrier against corrosive HCl, pepsin and food components.

America has the largest population of heartburn and acid-reflux sufferers. “The recommended start dosage of FenuLife is 2g with a glass of water 20 minutes prior to meal,” notes Leduc. “It can be consumed in dry capsule, coated tablet or pre-hydrated form.”
