Dairy Innovations Feature Health and Flavor Trends to Connect with Consumers

Zero Sugar

Chobani LLC, New Berlin, N.Y., expanded its Chobani Zero Sugar Greek Yogurt link from cups to include drinks as well.

Launched in 2021 Chobani Zero Sugar Greek Yogurt holds a market share of 2.1% within the total yogurt category, according to Nielsen xAOC data for the 52-week period ending April 29, 2023. For the same period, Chobani Zero Sugar contributed 37% to Chobani's overall growth in the yogurt category, officials say. New Chobani Zero Sugar Drinks include 7 fl oz single-serve bottles in Mixed Berry, Peaches & Cream, Strawberry Cheesecake and Milk & Cookies flavors at a suggested retail price of $1.99.

"This latest innovation takes an already successful product line—made with natural ingredients—to the next level by evolving it into a drinkable format, perfect for the on-the-go consumer,” said Niel Sandfort, chief innovation officer.


Fun Flavors

Saputo USA, Milwaukee, Wis., refreshed its Montchevre goat cheese brand with new advertising, packaging and products.

New Montchevre Duos feature two-in-one flavor mashups in a goat cheese log form. Montchevre Duos will be available in Sweet Hot Peppers + Garlic & Herbs, described as “a bold blend of spice and herbs wrapped around a piquant flavored core;” and Blueberry + Lemonade, which Saputo says is a “sweet blueberry-flavored core enveloped by a refreshing citrusy lemon twist.” Montchevre Duos start shipping in August for fall distribution.

Saputo also extended its Montchevre goat cheese toppers with a new Thai Sweet Chili flavor. Officials say it meets consumers' desire for elevated snacking and enjoyed success since the 2022 launch of Cranberry Port and Roasted Red Pepper flavors.


Spread the News

Challenge Dairy Products Inc., Dublin, Calif., partnered with McCormick & Co. to create Challenge Butter Snack Spread Lawry's Seasoned Salt. Official say the new “snack spread” combines freshly churned Challenge Butter and the iconic Lawry's signature blend of salt, herbs and spices

"Our Butter Snack Spread line is designed to bring more flavor to our consumers so we are thrilled to add Lawry's, a family favorite kitchen staple to our latest offering," said Michael Burdeny, president of Challenge Dairy Products, Inc. "Challenge and Lawry's products have been loved for generations and we predict fans of both will be ecstatic to easily elevate their snacks and meals with this new versatile butter."

Challenge Butter Snack Spreads are available in 6.5oz tubs with a SRP of $3.99 in select retailers nationwide including Walmart, Albertsons, Meijer, HEB, and Raley's, among others. Challenge Dairy Products is a wholly owned subsidiary of California Dairies Inc.


Cultured Crème

General Mills said its new Häagen-Dazs Cultured Crème brings luxury to the yogurt aisle. Officials say the offerings are slow crafted with a fermentation process that is up to five times longer than traditional yogurt—all to create a thick, creamy texture reminiscent of ice cream. Cultured Crème also uses a unique blend of dairy cultures that offer a smoother taste experience.

“From the smooth, creamy texture to the delicious, premium flavors, our new Häagen-Dazs Cultured Crème inspires anytime indulgence,” said Benjamin Myers, senior brand manager at General Mills.

Häagen-Dazs Cultured Crème flavors include Vanilla Bean, Strawberry, Coffee, Lemon, Blueberry, and Black Cherry. The offerings merchandise in the yogurt aisle with a SRP of $1.99. Cultured Crème items feature fresh milk, cream and real fruit with no artificial colors or artificial flavors.


Combining Crunch, Protein

HP Hood LLC, Lynnfield, Mass., says new Hood Cottage Cheese Medleys deliver a single-serve, flavor- and protein-packed on-the-go snack. Varieties include Pineapple with Honey Roasted Almonds, Strawberry with Graham Crackers and Chocolate Chips, and Blueberry with Crunchy Oat Granola.

“We know our consumers are seeking quick, easy, and exciting new ways to add protein into their diets in ways that are satisfying and delicious,” says Lynne Bohan, a company spokesperson. “Medleys meet that need while being delicious and convenient for any snacking moment.”

Hood Cottage Cheese Medleys are available in select grocery stores across New England and New York.


Pie as Ice Cream

Pierre’s Ice Cream Company Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, greeted summer with a new 1.5-quart Banana Cream Pie ice cream with real banana puree blended with pie crust pieces and a graham cracker swirl.

“The graham cracker swirl and baked pie crust pieces provide the perfect complement to the Banana Ice Cream,” said Matt Thornicroft, Pierre’s communications manager. “It’s one of those flavors that mixes together just the right amount of creaminess with the wonderful texture of pie pieces and graham cracker swirl.”
