Prepared Foods takes a look at new better-for-you foods, drinks and supplements introduced in February 2019.
Nutrisystem, Inc., Philadelphia, said its South Beach Diet division developed a South Beach Diet Keto-Friendly program as a low-carb, high-fat dietary pattern consistent with a “keto” diet. Officials say the new program was inspired “by the growing trend toward health-conscious consumers pursuing keto lifestyle and products, which have been associated with health benefits, weight loss and performance.”
The keto-friendly program option offers consumers the ability to adapt the proven South Beach Diet to make it more “keto.” All South Beach customers will receive the new, keto-friendly South Beach Simply Fit Shakes with 3g of net carbohydrates per serving, added minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium for hydration, and MCT oil—one of the top nutrients included in keto diets. Simply Fit Shakes also deliver 20g of protein per serving and probiotics to support digestive health and the immune system.

Officials add that South Beach has increased its menu by over 30% for 2019, including 24 new foods, and boasts a menu of more than 100 meals and snacks with globally-inspired flavors. Additionally, as part of a company-wide initiative to offer foods with simple, more recognizable ingredients, the brand conducted extensive research and updated its list of 71 restricted ingredients that can commonly be found and approved for use in food to ensure all South Beach Diet menu items meet this new standard in 2019.
Ginger Shots Inc., Huntington Beach, Calif., introduced four organic Probiotic Wellness Shots under the company’s Tulua brand. Officials say each 2oz wellness shot features 1 billion CFU of probiotics, as well as “unique blends of functional ingredients and premium cold-pressed organic juices.”
Varieties are Turmeric Ginger, Tart Cherry Cucumber, Blueberry Lemon and Apple Cinnamon. The company notes the Turmeric Ginger Wellness Shot is balanced with cold-pressed pineapple and lemon juices, coconut water and black pepper. Coconut water also is featured in the Blueberry Lemon and Apple Cinnamon Wellness Shots. Officials add that the probiotic used in the Tulua Probiotic Wellness Shots, bacilius coagulans GBI-30 6086, has been formulated to survive gastric transit 10x more effectively than yogurt cultures.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to get the benefits from fresh, high quality functional ingredients like ginger, turmeric and probiotics,” says CEO Zeyad Moussa. “A lot of these ingredients are difficult to work with, and we want to eliminate the hassle.”
All of the Ginger Shots and Tulua Wellness Shots varieties are USDA Organic, kosher, preservative and additive free, made with simple ingredients and high pressure processed. The Tulua brand was launched earlier this year with the release of their Organic Wellness Shots line. Ginger Shots plans to continue to develop new products under the Tulua brand as it grows and expands.

RTD, Low Sugar
The Nature’s Bounty Company, Ronkonkoma, N.Y., introduced a line of ready-to-drink Pure Protein 30g Shakes in two flavors: Rich Chocolate and Vanilla Milkshake.
Officials say the RTD shakes deliver 30g of protein, less than 1g of sugar, 4g of fiber and 24 vitamins and minerals per serving. The new protein shakes are available nationwide, and at 140 calories, make it easier than ever to fuel fitness goals on the go.
“The need for convenient, ready-to-drink options is driving growth in the protein category by a staggering 38%,” says Don Kerrigan, Nature’s Bounty president. “We’re excited to answer consumer demand with the introduction of Pure Protein 30g Shakes, giving people the convenience they’re looking for in a high-protein RTD that not only tastes fantastic, but has low sugar and a great blend of fiber, vitamins and minerals.”
